If you have always wanted to learn to play the guitar after being dazzled by the many guitar musical pieces or certain players from either the classical world or rock arena or both, but have not taken the step to actual picking up the instrument and learning it because you have no inkling or basically do not know music theory, then I will say to you - do not worry about it at all because you can definitely learn how to play the guitar without any knowledge of musical theory. Even though I picked up the instrument with some background in music theory, at that point in time I had lost almost everything that I had previously learned during my time on the piano. And I hardly depended on what I did know, because as a guitar player, you have many tools at your disposal to really learn the instrument thoroughly, without any handicap and you can become a complete guitarist if you have dedication and discipline.
Whether you have decided to learn to play the electric or classical guitar, there are many ways to do so and become a master at the guitar. And at this age of the Internet, the best thing about this is that you can even reach that stage with all the free resources and information related to the instrument available online. Not only are there free audio instructional guitar tracks, there are thousands of websites that have free guitar tabs that you can rely on to learn songs and music theory, which will improve your skills on the instrument. I have bought my fair share of guitar instructional DVDs as well as videos, and find them all very useful, and some of them I have never been able to find online, so do not just use free resources on the Internet as some investment on your guitar education will also be great.
If you have not noticed you can therefore learn how to play the guitar without knowing any music theory, by using guitar tabs. I spent a lot of time learning songs using these and while musical purists might object to it, I think they certainly do not hurt if you do not overrely on them too much. I have always made the concurrent effort to learn the theory as well but guitar tabs definitely provide a faster way of doing so if you are particularly struggling in the beginning. So where can we get free guitar tabs? It is all over the net.
Taking guitar lessons to learn to play guitar is also a viable option but I do not know if they are worth it since I have never taken a single direct instructional lesson before in my life. I did not have much money then to spend on them and certainly have no idea if the guitar teachers available around in my area were good enough for me to spend my time with. I depended on some online guitar lessons and some of them teach everything - from classical, jazz, rock to even country guitar so they were certainly great fun. I suppose I did learn a lot about playing the guitar from these online lessons.
So I was able to learn to play the guitar without any music theory knowledge because of some systems available such as guitar tabs, while my hard work and effort provided me with the motivation and thrust to produce decent results that after a few decades of doing so, I believe that I am more than a capable guitarist which have even led me to start some of my own online guitar lessons which I provide both free and some which require fees paid by students because after all I make a living teaching and playing the guitar, and it is a dream that I know many people also have, and hope they can succeed, and at the same time try to help them do so as well.
